Introducing Plattan 2 Bluetooth

Plattan 2 Bluetooth combines the iconic Plattan design with 30+ hours of wireless playtime for Urbanears’ most liberating listening experience yet.

Today Urbanears releases Plattan 2 Bluetooth, a headphone modeled after their bestselling headphone of all times but with one important difference: It cuts ties with the cord entirely, and goes beyond the industry standard with 30+ hours of wireless playtime.

In addition to 30+ hours of wireless playtime per charge, Plattan 2 Bluetooth offers a crisp, full spectrum sound experience with up to 10 meters of listening range. The headphone is smartphone compatible and music is navigated using a single, intuitive control knob. Other features include an ergonomic fit, music sharing plug-in, and collapsible design for easy portability.

To celebrate Plattan 2 Bluetooth’s 30+ hours of wireless playtime and the legacy of the textile-wrapped cord, Urbanears has called upon Swedish knitwear designer Sandra Backlund to help transform 4,500 meters of cords into five architectural pieces of wearable art.

“Human-centered design and functionality have always been integral parts of the Urbanears brand, and the cord is a good example of that,” says Ida Holmen, PR Manager.“When we wrapped the cord in fabric, it was transformed beyond its standard function into something that added value to the overall look, feel, and experience. To mark Plattan 2 Bluetooth’s evolution beyond the cord, we wanted to pay tribute to this piece of Plattan’s legacy in a fitting way.”

Known for her three-dimensional knitwear creations and unorthodox material choices, Sandra was considered the ideal creator to take on a foreign subject matter like Plattan’s textile cords.

“When Urbanears came to me with the idea of working with their cords it piqued my curiosity,” says Sandra. “I love experimenting with different shapes and materials so I was definitely up to the task.”

Plattan 2 Bluetooth is now available for purchase online at urbanears.com and at select retailers worldwide. The headphone is priced at USD 100 and is available in the five classic Urbanears colors: Black, Dark Grey, Indigo, Tomato, and White.

Sandra Backlund is an award winning designer with a degree from Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm, Sweden. She founded her fashion label right after graduation in 2004 and has been working with her collections full time ever since. Sandra is known to experiment with a lot of different materials and techniques, but it’s her three-dimensional collage knitting that’s most significant. Her work has been featured in exhibitions all around the world, including at The Art Institute of Chicago, the Fashion and Textile Museum in London, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo.

Urbanears Hideout at ADE

For the third year in a row, the Urbanears Hideout provided the ultimate retreat at the Amsterdam Dance Event.

ADE means many things to many people, but for Urbanears, it’s a chance to tap into our music roots, reconnect with old friends, meet new people, and gather inspiration. But, most importantly, it’s about being part of an event that is as passionate about music as we are. For the third year in a row, we built our hideout in a penthouse high atop the Rokin in a space fittingly named The View. It was there that we created a retreat unlike any other.

Urbanears awarded two Red Dot distinctions for high quality design

The Urbanears design team have created two outstanding products that the expert committee for the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017 has recognised with the internationally sought-after seal of quality.

The Urbanears Connected Speakers – the first speakers from Urbanears – launched earlier this year and give users the freedom to stream music in multiple rooms from a large number of sources, such as Spotify, Airplay, Chromecast or Bluetooth. Day-to-day play is managed using the two knobs located on its top panel, a tactile operation that bring back the charm and simplicity of walking up to the household radio and twisting the dial.

“Urbanears is all about humanizing technology, using design as a way to make tech more intuitive, easy to use and appealing, in your home or over your ears”, said Oscar Axhede, Chief Evangelist and Co-founder, Urbanears.

Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of the Red Dot Award: “The Red Dot winners are pursuing the right design strategy. They have recognised that good design and economic success go hand in hand. The award by the critical Red Dot jury documents their high design quality and is indicative of their successful design policy.”

The significance of the international design competition, Red Dot Award: Product Design, with its headquarter in Essen, Germany is well established internationally. It was already more than 60 years ago that a jury convened for the first time to assess the best designs of the day. Since then, an expert team has been awarding the seal of quality for good design and innovation to the outstanding designs of the year.

Manufacturers and designers around the globe were also invited to enter their products in the 2017 competition. The jury of around 40 independent designers, design professors and specialist journalists tested, discussed and assessed each individual product, awarding the Honourable Mention for a well-conceived detail solution, the Red Dot for high design quality and the Red Dot: Best of the Best for groundbreaking design. In total, the competition received more than 5,500 entries from 54 countries this year.

About the Red Dot Design Award:

In order to appraise the diversity in the field of design in a professional manner, the Red Dot Design Award breaks down into the three disciplines of Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept. The Red Dot Award is organised by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen and is one of the world’s largest design competitions. In 1955, a jury convened for the first time to assess the best designs of the day. In the 1990s, Red Dot CEO Professor Dr. Peter Zec developed the name and brand of the award. Ever since, the sought-after Red Dot award has been the revered international seal of outstanding design quality. More information is available at www.red-dot.org.

Urbanears – Connected Speakers

Urbanears enters the sound space of living rooms for the very first time with a new line of Connected Speakers set to bring unheard of ease and connectivity to the multi-room listening experience.

Today, Urbanears releases a new line of Connected Speakers engineered to bring boundless connectivity and powerful sound to the multi-room listening experience. With humanized interfaces that allow for maximum ease of use, and seamless integration with everyday listening. First out in the Urbanears Wi-Fi speaker lineup are models Stammen and Baggen.

Packed with advanced Wi-Fi technology, Urbanears Connected Speakers give users the freedom to play their favorite music from a variety of sources. Users can stream from Spotify Connect, Airplay or Chromecast built-in; connect via Bluetooth, or use the classic aux cord hook-up. Speaker software stays up to date with the latest features and connection possibilities via over-the-air updates.

Two or more Connected Speakers can be combined to form a multi room system, giving users the opportunity to create a sound experience customized to their unique space. A different mood can be set to each room, or the speakers can be grouped together for synchronized listening.

There are no digital displays or cryptic messages to be found on the Connected Speaker interface. Day-to-day play is managed using the two knobs located on its top panel. A single push switches Pause to Play, or Solo to Multi Mode. A twist adjusts volume, or select one of seven presets which users customize with their favorite Spotify playlists or Internet Radio stations. Such tactile operations bring back the charm and simplicity of walking up to the household radio and twisting the dial.

“Urbanears is all about bringing people closer to technology,” says Oscar Axhede, co-founder and creative director at Urbanears. “We wanted to create a listening experience that would bring the best of sound and connectivity into people’s homes, without the hassle of trying to figure out how to make the technology work.”

First time setup is simple too, with help from the Urbanears Connected app which takes users through a step-by-step flow and optional tutorial. The app can also be used to manage stuff behind the scenes— like presets, speaker groupings, and equalizer settings.

Each speaker is wrapped in acoustically transparent fabric, and equipped to introduce powerful, well-balanced soundscapes to listeners’ favorite space. Playing everything from high resolution digital audio to the rich analog sounds of a vinyl player. Baggen is suited for larger spaces like larger living rooms, patios, and open-floor-plan homes. While Stammen easily fills small to mid-sized spaces like living rooms, bedrooms, and studio apartments. Using the in-app equalizer, users can fine-tune the treble and bass balance to complement different types of music and find their listening sweet-spot.

Connected Speakers currently come in six color variations, including Dirty Pink, Vinyl Black, Plant Green, Concrete Grey, Goldfish Orange and Indigo Blue.

Everything is Different – Urbanears Launches Plattan 2

Today Urbanears releases a new version of Plattan, their best-selling on-ear headphone. Plattan 2 features an improved frequency response and clearer definition, extra isolating ear cushions, and a 3D Hinge for a more customized fit. And Plattan lovers will still recognize all those iconic details that make Plattan, Plattan—like the fabric cord, built-in mic/remote, and ZoundPlug for instant music sharing.

“Plattan has been upgraded some 50 times since 2009, yet none of those upgrades were big enough to name it Plattan 2—until now,” said Oscar Axhede, co-founder and creative director of Urbanears. “Plattan 2 embodies everything we’ve learned over the years, while staying true to the classic traits that make Plattan a favorite, and a mainstay in our collection.”

Plattan has become one of Urbanears’ most popular headphone models, with 3 million sold since its launch in 2009. Plattan 2 is now available for purchase online at urbanears.com, and at select retailers worldwide.

Urbanears Launches ‘Limited Sweat Edition’

The Limited Sweat Edition combines Hellas from the Active collection with the sweat of seven inspiring movement-makers who did everything from running in a Californian desert, to playing a four hour game of ping-pong.

Each pair of Hellas was captured and sealed in a bag post-workout, which was signed and labeled with all the sweaty details. Would you keep them as a collectors item, or give them another go? (They do have washable parts, you know.)

The first batch was released on May 27, made from the sweat of running coach Knox Robinson, dancer ‘WilldaBeast’ Adams, and musician Amanda Bergman, who each did their own unique workout in a Californian desert while wearing a pair of Hellas headphones. Additional pairs to be released include Hellas worn by British singer VV Brown, American model Barbie Ferreira, and German fashion star Bonnie Strange.

Proceeds from Limited Sweat edition sales will go to the charity of each movement-maker’s choice.

New colors added

Here’s your first look at the brand new Spring/Summer 2014 Urbanears color collection, officially available as of today at Urbanears retailers worldwide and online at Urbanears.com.

Say hello to Forget-Me-Not, Julep and Citrus, three thirst-quenching colors that look just as good on a pair of headphones as they do as garnish in an ice-cold cocktail. Because your music should be refreshing.

Bottoms up!
